Abstract

The objective of the study entitled The Great Gatsby is to describe the American Dreams, the ways to reach the American Dreams, and the characters' corruption in reaching the American Dreams. In collecting the data, the library research including internet browsing is done to form the conceptual models used to find relevant data in the novel. The data are descriptively analyzed using philosophy approach. The first objective discusses the American Dream. Gatsby's dream is getting a lot of money and reaching the happiness. Daisy's dream is gaining money for keeping prestige and establishment. Tom's dream is using his wealth for hedonistic life. The last is Myrtle Wilson. Myrtle's dream is reaching money for hedonistic life too. The second objective discusses the way of reaching the American Dream. Gatsby's does many of professions in getting a lot of money and does many of efforts in having Daisy back since she is the source of his happiness. Daisy Buchanan's reaching her dream makes her marry a rich person. Tom Buchanan reaches his dream by using his money for hedonistic life including having a mistress. The last is Myrtle Wilson. She reaches her dream by becoming Tom's mistress. The third objective discusses the corruption of the characters in reaching the American Dream. The corruption of Jay Gatsby's in reaching a lot of money is by becoming a bootlegger. And the corruption in trying to win Daisy is by impressing her with the wealth he possesses. Daisy Buchanan corrupts her dream in reaching the money for prestige and establishment makes her stagnant in the pleasurable activities and have no idealism. Tom corrupts his dream by stagnating in the pleasurable activities too. Myrtle Wilson corrupts her dream in the way she gains the wealth by becoming Tom's mistress. Using Tom's wealth, she buys everything she wants.
