Abstract

It is said theoretically that students having adequate language skill will succeed to gain a high grade academic achievement. It is so because their language skill facilitates nearly every point in their learning activity. Using this as a starting point, the written carried out the correlative study. The study correlates score in Bahasa Indonesia with academic achievement index of 223 students of Widya Mandala University in Madiun for testing whether or not these two achievements are correlated as a way to see whether or not the students' language skill gives impact to their academic achievement grade. In this study, the data, since distribution is not normal are analyzed using a nonparametric correlation test; and the result is us follows: there is a positive correlation between students' score in Bahasa Indonesia and their academic achievement index although the index of correlation of these is not so high, that is, only 0,42 (analyzed using Tau-Kendall Test) or 0,54 (analyzed using Spearman-Rank Test). This may mean that students' language skill just played a little role in determining their academic achievement and that there are many other factors influencing it. But, this is, of course, not a final conclusion and doesn't mean that theoretical statement which has been explained is wrong. There is some explanation be made to answer why this accurs.
