Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) To explain the kinds of grammatical cohesive devices that are used in The Lottery and (2) to describe the function of grammatical cohesive devices the writer also uses library research. The data of this thesis includes all of the words in sentence which have relation with grammatical cohesive devices in The Lottery. The analysis is divided into two. The first one is the kinds of grammatical cohesive devices, that is, reference, substitution, ellipsis and conjunction.Reference itself includes personal reference and demonstrative reference.Then,substitution includes nominal substitution and verbal substitution. Furthermore,ellipsis consists nominal ellipsis, Moreover conjunction consists additive conjunction, adversative conjunction, causal conjunction and temporal conjunction. The function of personal reference and demonstrative reference is to indicate the person or object of the issues which are stated in the previous sentence. Then, the function of substitute is to substitute the similar element.Furthermore,the function of ellipsis is to omit the similar noun, verb, and clause which have been stated in the preceding sentence. Moreover, the function of conjunction is to set up a relationship between two clauses.
