Abstract

This research is aimed to analyze: (1) The process of describing the meaning of symbol of love and death denotatively and connotatively that revealing the theme love and death in the poem. (2) finding the symbol of love and death that supporting the theme of the poem, love and death. This is a library research in which all the data and the theories are taken from written forms including internet browsing. The theories used in this study are the theories of setting, meaning, symbol, and theme. Moreover,structural approach and historical biographical approach are taken to decide the strategy in analyzing the connotative and denotative meaning that revealing the theme love and death. This research is conducted in the steps as follows:(1) reading,(2)interpreting, (3) classifying, (4) analyzing the data, and (5) concluding. The data used in this research are all the symbols existing in the poem. The analysis shows that: (1) The writer has found seven meaning that revealing the theme love and death in the poem.They are separation,suffering,loss,desire, fidelity, yearning, and also hopeless. (2) the writer has found the symbol of love and death. They are divided into two kinds. There are four symbols of love such as faitfhful indeed, thee, spring, and also golden dream.Meanwhile, there are eight symbols of death such as cold,snow,far,wave,sever,grave, rest, and empty world that are found in the poem. After analyzing the denotative and connotative meanings to reveal the theme, the writer finds some symbols that are used to support the theme, love and death. The writer concludes that the theme of the poem “Remembrance” is about love and death.
