Abstract

This thesis is focused on Arthur Rowe's sense of guilt in Graham Greene's The Ministry of Fear. There are three questions to answer: Firstly, what the causes Arthur Rowe's sense of guilt are. Secondly, what the effect Arthur Rowe's sense of guilt are. Thirdly, How Arthur Rowe's overcome his sense of guilt does. In this research,the researcher uses library research. It includes the internet browsing. There are two kinds of data: primary and secondary data. The primary data are taken from the novel The Ministry of Fear. The secondary data are taken from the biography of Graham Greene, the theories of guilt by Galena Dymkova,theories of conflict by Kelly Griffith,theories of character by Reaske. The causes of Arthur Rowe's sense of guilt are killing his own wife. The reason of killing his own wife is Alice's disease. There are two effects of Arthur Rowe's sense of guilt toward his life and his enemies. (1) Toward his life, Arthur Rowe's life changes after he murders his wife.He becomes sentimental, depressed, anxious and lonely. (2) Toward his enemy, Arthur Rowe's life is in serious trouble. He feels furious because he has a terror every night.His enemies want Arthur Rowe to join Nazi. Arthur Rowe can overcome his sense of guilt by doing several things. (1)Toward his life, he goes to Regal Court, and fortunately, the majesty says that it is mercy killing Arthur Rowe kills his own wife because on pity. Arthur Row can overcome his inner conflict and his feeling of guilt of killing his wife. He becomes stronger and uses his common sense in solving the problems. Moreover,his weakness of being sensitive has changed. He becomes realistic in facing his problems. He is more open-hearted to what happens in the past. The most important thing is that he has opened his heart for another woman, Anna Hillfe.(2) toward his enemies, Arthur Rowe finds some help from a private investigator and the police, when he meets Mr. Travers, his enemies following him and exploding the hotel.
