Abstract

The objectives of the study are (1) the sources of jealousy undergone by the characters and (2) jealousy-based attitudes and actions done by the characters in William Shakespeare's Othello: The Moor of Venice. Library research including internet browsing is done to form conceptual models based on the related studies. The conceptual models, then, are used to find the data. The data corpus of this thesis includes all of the phrases, clauses, and discourses which have relation with the sources of jealousy undergone by the characters and the jealousy based-attitudes and actions done by the characters in William Shakespeare's Othello: The Moor of Venice. Psychological approach is used to analyze the data descriptively. The sources of jealousy undergone by the characters in William Shakespeare's Othello: The Moor of Venice vary. Firstly, the sources of Iago's jealousy are envying other's achievement, envying other's happy marriage, having love frustration, and suspecting his wife's love affair. Secondly, the sources of Othello's jealousy are trusting the wrong person and doubting his wife's fidelity.Thirdly, the sources of Roderigo's jealousy are having love frustration and trusting the rumor about Cassio's love affair. The jealousy-based attitudes and actions done by the characters in William Shakespeare's Othello:The Moor of Venice are variable too. The jealousy-based attitudes and actions done by Iago's are creating rumor, manipulating others,making others inferior, Iago's plotting to murder Cassio, and Iago's murdering of his wife. Jealousy-based attitudes and actions done by Othello's are getting angry,Othello's plotting to murder Cassio, and Othello's murdering of his wife.Jealousy-based attitudes and actions done by Roderigo's are attempting to commit suicide and Roderigo's plotting to murder Cassio.
