Abstract
This thesis is focused on Lavinia Mannon's revenge as main character in Eugene O'Neill's Mourning Becomes Electra. There are three questions to answer: Firstly, what the revenge of Lavinia is. Secondly, what the causes of Lavinia's revenge are. Thridly, what the effects of Lavinia's revenge are. To achieve the objectives, this thesis employs library research ordesk research including internet browsing is done for collecting data. There are two kinds of data: primary data and secondary data. The primary data are obtained from the drama itself,Mourning Becomes Electra. The secondary data are taken from the theory of character, main character, cause and effect, revenge, psychology, guilt, anxiety and frustration. Firstly, the writer finds out that Lavinia's revenges have succeeded. The success of Lavinia's revenge appears when Adam Brant is killed by Orin. After killing Adam Brant, Orin confesses to her mother that he is the murderer of Adam Brant. Hearing the confession, Christine decides to commit suicide by using Ezra Mannon's pistol. The event indicates that Lavinia has succeeded to do her revenge because of two people who are supposed to kill her father have died. Secondly, the writer discusses the causes of Lavinia's revenge. The writer finds out that the main cause of Lavinia's revenge is Ezra Mannon's death. Ezra Mannon's death makes Lavinia alone. She feels that her father, whom she loves and respects to, has gone. The feeling of losing her father motivates Lavinia for doing her revenge toward her mother and Adam Brant. It also gives Lavinia strength to do her revenge. From that event Lavinia decides to take revenge toward her mother and Adam Brant. Thirdly, the writer discusses the effects of Lavinia's revenge. The writer finds out that Lavinia's revenge has several effects for her. She faces the consequences that she has never expected. One of the consequences is that she always feels hunted by 'the dead', as if they are asking her to pay for her crime and expecting her to be punished. As a result, she cannot live in peace.Furthermore, the revenge even drives her to suffer from some psychological problems. The psychological problems that she faces as the effects of her revenge are guilty feeling, anxiety, and frustration.
