Abstract

Literature is a medium of communication which shows human's thought in the form of written language. Literature has three kinds, such as novel, drama and poetry. Novel is a long story written in the prose. While drama is a kind ofliterary work written in dialogue form. Here, the authors of novel and drama show imagination of place and time that can be caught bythe readers. The researcher's reasons in writing this thesis are:(1) to describe the main character's love ambition in Wuthering Heights and that in Desire Under the Elms, (2) to describe the effects of their love ambition on themselves and on the other characters in Wuthering Heights and those in Desire Under the Elms,(3) to describe the similarities and the differences between the main character's love ambition in Wuthering Heights and those in Desire Under the Elms. Then,the reseacher of the thesis chooses novel written by Emily Bronte and drama written by Eugene O'Neill. Both of them are famous authors and have multi talent. Besides, the researcher understands more about the main character's love ambition after reading those novels. Some of the main character's love ambitions which happen are live together with someone that becomes a reason why their love ambitions happen. They are interested in their behaviours and appearances. Beside that, the lact of support and care from the people around the main characters make them have big ambition to get their lovers. They have different way to get what they want. They try to make their ambition to be successful. In writing this thesis, the researcher takes a main source of data from the novel Wuthering Heights written by Emily Bronte and drama Desire Under the Elms written by Eugene O'Neill. The researcher also collects some data and other references from some books and internet to support this thesis. Besides,theories of comparative, ambition, love, character, psychological and sociological conflicts are used to explain the main character's love ambition in Wuthering Heights and that in Desire Under the Elms. The researcher just focuses this thesis on love ambition, the effects of main character's love ambition, and the differences and similarities of the main character's love ambition in Wuthering Heights and those in Desire Under the Elms. The researcher is able to learn and understand more about the main character's love ambition in Wuthering Heights and that in Desire Under the Elms.Therefore, it can be concluded if the people have an ambition, they must be able to control their ambition by doing the positive thing.
