Abstract
This research discusses about discourse analysis, especially in its cohesion. In this research, the researcher has some purposes, that are to describe the types of grammatical cohesion and the types of lexical cohesion which are applied in R.L. Stevenson Treasure Island novel. The data consist of words, phrases, clauses and sentences which are taken from Treasure Island novel. The method ofresearch that is used in this thesis is Descriptive method. Here, after reading the novel, the researcher collects the data,classifies the data and analyzes them. Finally, the researcher makes the conclusion based on the result ofthe research. The result of the study among them are the type of grammatical and lexical cohesion. The types of grammatical cohesion are reference 1l data (13,75%), substitution I1 duta (13,75%), ellipsis 6 data (7,5%), and conjunction 7data (8,75%). While the types of lexical cohesion are repetition 9 data (11,25%),synonymy 11 data (13,75%), hyponymy 4 data (5%), general word 5 data (6,25%), and collocation 16 data (20%).
