Abstract

The objectives of the research entitled Sarah's Religiosity in Graham Greene's The End of the Affair are: (1) to find Sarah's experiences that make her not believe in God, (2) to find Sarah's experiences that make her believe in God,and(3) to describe the effects of Sarah's religiosity on the other characters.Library research including Internet browsing is used to find the related theories,to form the conceptual models, thus it is used to find the data. The data corpus of this research all of the phrases, clauses, sentences, and even paragraph and discourses related to the main character's religiosity in Graham Greene's The End of the Affair.Psychological and sociological approaches are used to analyze the data. Firstly, there are two experiences that make Sarah not believe in God found in The End of the Affair, namely: living with the people who do not believe in God and having relationship with the people who do not believe in God. It is difficult for Sarah to develop her faith well in the middle of the people who do not believe in God. The lack of support and care from the people in surround also influence Sarah's faith. Secondly, Sarah's experiences that make her believe in God are: Sarah's deal with God, Sarah's personal conflict with God, and Sarah's steadiness in believing God. One gets his or her religiosity only ifhe or she has already passed some religious dimensions. They are cognition or beliefdimension ofreligiosity, affect or spiritual dimension ofreligiosity and behavior or practical dimension of religiosity. Thirdly, Sarah's religiosity influences the other characters. Each characters get different effect. Basically, Sarah's religiosity invites people to honor what one has believed.
