Abstract

This study talks about a man namely John Howard Griffin who has a project to observe the Black community in the Deep South. In accordance with the problem, the objectives of this study are to describe Griffin as the main character, the cause and the effect of racial discrimination and the kind of racial discrimination experienced by Griffin Further, the writer uses library research including internet browsing to formulate the conceptual models and then use them to find the relevant data in this novel. Besides, this research uses philosophical approach to analyze data descriptively. John Howard Griffin, as the main character, is a white man with a high responsibility and has a respect to the racial problem. Griffin concentrates his project to the Black community as the object of the observation. Griffin changes his skin to be a black color to complete his observation and makes it successful. Griffin looks for a Black community having a high amount of suicide. From this problem, Griffin wants to know the real condition in this community In getting the data, Griffin gets many bad treatments from the White community who stays in the Deep South and the other areas Racial treatment that is faced by Griffin influences both physically and mentally. It is hard to stay in the Deep South with many racial treatments that happen However, Griffin tries to survive in this bad condition. To make this project successful. Griffin tries to be friendly to the local community during the observation.
