Abstract

This study is concerned with one of Henrik Ibsen's plays entitled A Doll's House. Actually, the writer of the thesis has three objectives of the problem, they are: (1) analyze masculine values of the male characters in Ibsen' A Doll's House; (2) know masculine values of the female characters in Ibsen's A Doll's House; and (3) find the effects of the masculine values of the male and female characters in Ibsen's A Doll's House. While the data corpus are in the form of words, phrases, clauses and further discourse, they can be dialogues. Then, the writer employs library research and internet browsing. Moreover, in this research, psycho-social approach is used. Basically, there are either masculine or feminine sides in one's personality. A Doll's House which written in the Victorian period describes male domination toward female. In the case of that, masculine values are possessed not only by male but also by female. Through the male characters which are of Torvald Helmer, Dr. Rank, and Nils Krogstad, the writer of the thesis will analyze their masculine values. Torvald Helmer and Nils Krogstad show their masculine values toward Nora. Nora becomes the victim of their masculine values. While Dr. Rank has his masculine values to face his serious ill. Further, the writer also analyzes masculine values of female characters which are of Nora Helmer and of Mrs.Linde. Their masculine values are described on their bravery to take decision in solving their problems life. Based on the existence of masculine values of male and female characters, it gives effects not only for the life of every character but also for the life of other characters. To solve his or her problem life, everyone needs the masculine values on his or her personality especially in taking decision. Moreover, in the family life, there are a lot of complex problems so one has to think much to solve them. Further, one also thinks the effects of masculine values which related to the other's rights and the important thing is do not seize the other's rights.
