Abstract

The objectives of the study are to describe the kinds and the purpose of time deixis that occurs in Eugene O'neil's Desire Under the Elms. Library method is done to find the underlying theories, namely the definitions of pragmatics, deixis, speech act, semantics, and speech community. In this thesis, the writer uses descriptive method. It is done by reading some studies that related to the time deixis, finding the time deixis in the play, collecting, classifying, analyzing and tabulating the data. The data are analyzed descriptively. The results of data analysis reveal five kinds of time deixis. They are time deixis based on the tense (2%), deictic time adverb (42%), time adverb now (39%), time adverb soon (3%), calendar system (2%), non-calendar system (10%), common noun deictic time (4%), and greeting (3%). The purpose of using time deixis in the conversation are: representative (8%), directives (4%), commissives (10%), and expressive (3%).
