Abstract

The study is related to the imageries and the symbols which areapplied in the form of the statue named Ozymandias in Percy Bysshe Shelly’s Ozymandias. It is about the power and the powerlessness of King Ramses II. The writer pictures statue of Ozymandias as king Ramses II. This studyis aimed to analyze (1)the imagery that shows the King’s power, (2)the imagery that shows the King’s powerlessness,and (3) to find out the imageries which constitute the symbols. To formulate the analysis, the writer uses library research including the internet browsing to support the data. The main dataare taken from a poem entitled “Ozymandias”. The theory of imagery, symbol, and setting are used to analyze the data. Furthermore the approaches used in this research are structural approach and historical approach. Visual imagery, auditory imagery, and organic imagery areimageries that show the king’s power. In the poem, the statue is very great. It is reflected to the king, Ramses II, who was very powerful. Ozymandias introduces himself. He shows off his status as a king proudly.It illustrates how great and powerful Ramses IIwas. The statue is made by a sculptor who is very advanced in describing the king looks like. It is pictured that Ramses II did not want to be forgotten by his people, so he built a very great statue of him. Some imageries that show the king’s powerlessness are visual imagery, kinaesthetic imagery, and organic imagery. Ramses II never thinks that all what he had done will be broken in the end. His power became powerlessness. There was a vast kingdom, but now that kingdom hadvanished. Ozymandias’ condition is portrayed as Ramses II who only cares to his power. It is reflected to the king Ramses II who always never care to his people. The writer finds some imageries which constitute the symbols. They are destruction, family, and leader.Symbol of destruction is shown in the shape of Ramses II’s statue which is not complete any longer. It is symbolized the destruction of Ramses II. There are many statues beside his statue which are symbolized as his great family. Symbol of leader is shown in the wide place where he led the area for many years
