Abstract
The objectives of this study entitled An Analysis of Materialism toward Ebenezer Balfour in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Kidnapped are (1) to figure out what materialistic types seen from Marxist view toward Ebenezer Balfour. (2) to analyze the effects of materialism toward Ebenezer Balfour. To formulate the analysis, the writer used library research including the internet browsing to support the data. The main data is taken from novel of Kidnapped. The theory of Character, Characterization, Marxism, Marxist in literature, and Materialism are used to analyze the data. Furthermore, the approaches used in this research are sociological approach and psychological approach. In this research, the writer only focuses on the main antagonist namely, Ebenezer Balfour. He does some Materialism for fulfilling his desire for wealth and desire for having inheritance property of the House of Shaws. In order to obtain his desire, he becomes greedy, introvert, and cruel man.
