Abstract

The writer's reason in analyzing poetry is that she really loves poetry.Through poetry, the writer is able to express her imagination freely to achieve her wishes.By analyzing “My Children at the Dump” and “Subway Love” written by John Updike,the writer is able to catch the content of those poems. The love theme which is discussed in both poems can strengthen the faith that love is the source of everything that happen in the world. In this writing, the writer take the main sources of data from the poems “My Children at the Dump" and "Subway Love” written by John Updike and by collecting some data and another references in order to support this thesis. Besides, theory of love is used to describe the love that is experienced by the characters in the poems in dedicating their lives, and theory of symbol is used to explain the meaning of certain phrases and lines to make the poems clear to the readers. Many lesson can be taken from the poems“My Children at the Dump" and “Subway Love”.The first poem tells about a father who really loves his children and he struggle hard to give his love and affection to his children, although he has divorced from his wife. His wife gives many rules that makes him difficult to meet his children. The second poem tells about a negro woman who lives in underground. She must struggles for her own life without her beloved husband. She has to survive the hard life even if there are many people who underestimates her. She is able to survive her life as she loves her dead husband so much and keeps the beautiful memories of her husband in her mind.
