Abstract

The objective of the research entitled The Parallelism between Setting and Characterization of Charles Dickensl A Christmas Carol and those of The Chimes is (1) to describe the parallelism between setting of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and that of The Chimes (2) to describe the parallelism between characterization of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol and that of The Chimes.Library research including internet browsing is done to find the related theories.The related theories are used to form the conceptual models. The data are all of the words,phrases, clauses, or paragraph which contains the parallelism of setting and characterization between Charles Dickens' novels A Christmas Carol and that of The Chimes. Sociological and psychological approaches are used to analyze the data descriptively. The setting of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol parallels with that of The Chimes. The setting of bothnovels discusses the setting of place and the setting time. The setting of time happens in the winter season. In A Christmas Carol happens in the Christmas day, while in The Chimes happens in the NewYear day. Besides, the setting of time A Christmas Carol and that of The Chimes also happen at night. The settings of places of the two novels also parallel.Many events happen in the similiar places, namely house and office. Houses are the place of the main characters' frequent meetings with the ghosts in both A Christmas Carol and The Chimes. Besides, the main characters in both novels spend almost all of his time to work in office. Further, the characterization of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol parallels with that of The Chimes. The main characters in both novels are hardworking persons. They spend almost all of his time for working.They greatly care their bussines. Besides,the main characters in those two novels hate the great days. Ebenezer Scrooge, the main character of A Christmas Carol, hates Christmas very much since he thinks Christmas is a humbug and nonsense until the three spirits come to him and show the greatness of Christmas. He turns from hating Christmas to love it. He, therefore, promises to celebrate Christmas and changes his behaviors. Similarly, Toby Veck, the major character of The Chimes hates New Year very much. He also never celebrates New Year until the ghost comes and shows the greatness of New Year to him. He turns from hating New Year to loving it. He, then, promises to celebrate New Year, permits his daughte to marry on New Year. Toby hopes that New Year will bring the new hope and happines for everybody.
