Abstract

The objectives of the study entitled An Analysis of Social Criticism of Court in Arthur Miller's the Crucible are (1) to describe the condition of witch trial hysteria as reflected on The Crucible and (2) to elaborate the effects of witch trial on the main characters. In collecting the data, the library research including internet browsing is done to support this thesis.The data are descriptively analyzed using psycho -social approach. The condition of witch trial hysteria in The Crucible is terrible. The court arrests people who are accused of being witches and proclaims them guilty, eventhough they are innocent. The control of the trial is organized by the judge and by the certain members of community. The effects of the witch trial on the main characters are on Abigail,John Proctor, and Elizabeth. The effect of the witch trial on Abigail is that she uses the witch trial to get her ambition and to take revenge. It causes John Proctor and many people to be hanged. The effect of the witch trial on John Proctor is that he uses the witch trial to save the innocent people by sacrificing himself. The effect of the witch trial on Elizabeth is that she uses the witch trial to save her importance by being hypocrite.
