Abstract

This research discusses the use of English elliptical constructions. In this research, the researcher analyzes the two problems, namely the kinds of English elliptical constructions and the real sentences from which the English elliptical constructions are derived in Graham Greene's The Living Room The method of research used in this research is descriptive method. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The data consist of words, phrases, and clauses which undergo elliptical processes taken from The Living Room play. Furthermore, in this research the researcher discusses three kinds of ellipsis. They are nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. The researcher finds 100 sentences which undergo elliptical processes in The Living Room play. The data analysis shows that 28 data (28%) are nominal ellipsis which include 26 data of nominal ellipsis without substitution and 3 data of nominal ellipsis with substitution. Next, 19 data (19%) are verbal ellipsis which include 13 data of verbal ellipsis without substitution and 6 data of verbal ellipsis with substitution. Furthermore, 53 data (53%) are clausal ellipsis which include 49 data of clausal ellipsis without substitution and 4 data of clausal ellipsis with substitution.
