Abstract

The objectives of the research entitled An Analysis of Women and Marriage in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice are (1) to explain the women's views on marriage in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, (2) to explain the factors restricting women's marriage possibilities in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, and (3) to describe the women's marital lives in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Library research including internet browsing is employed to find the relevant theories, to form conceptual models that, in the following term, are used to find the data. The data corpus of this research are all of the phrases, clauses, sentences, and even paragraphs and discourses related to women and marriage in Jane Austen Pride and Prejudice. Psychological and social approaches are used to analyze the data. Firstly, there are two views on marriage found in Pride and Prejudice namely: convenient marriage (marriage for financial reason) and love marriage (marriage for the sake of love). Love marriage is divided into passionate love marriage (marriage for sensual desire) and companionate love marriage (marriage on the basis of true love and mature consideration). Secondly, the factors restricting the women's marriage possibilities are status and money. Having low status and being not wealthy, a woman will have limited chance to be introduced to a wealthy man from high class society. It means that she has limited marriage possibilities.Thirdly, women's marital lives could be successful or unsuccessful. A success in a marriage is determined by mutual love, affection, understanding, sacrifice and respect which are shared by a married partner. The true happiness in a marital life is gained trough companionate love marriage.
