Abstract

"Ghosts" is a masterpiece play of the great literary from the Norway talented writer; Henrik Ibsen. The aims of the study are: (1) to analyze the male domination, (2) to elaborate Mrs. Alving's hypocrisy to cover up the male domination in her domestic life, (3) to know the effects of Mr. Alving's domination and Mrs. Alving's hypocrisy toward the other characters. The data corpus consists of all words, phrases, clauses and further discourse. They are in the form of dialogues. Meanwhile, in data collection, library research including internet browsing is applied. Then, in this research, psycho-social approach is used. In this thesis, the study wants to discuss about male domination in social life as well as in domestic life. Generally, male domination takes bad effects for female's position. Men have higher authority than females, whether in government, society, and domestic life. In that case, male domination causes the oppression toward the female. This play illustrates a woman called Mrs.Alving who tries to defend her whole domestic life. She has been betrayed by her husband. This play has illustrated that Mrs. Alving has been dominated by her husband. This makes her moral decadent. She often tells a lie, gets oppressed, and becomes hypocrite. The negative effect of Mr. Alving's domination and Mrs. Alving's hypocrisy is the destruction of their domestic life, including the destruction of their son's life, Oswald.
