Abstract
This thesis, entitled The Gothic Elements in Coleridge's "The Rime of The Ancient Mariner" has two objectives. Firstly, the writer discusses five gothic elements in "The Rime of The Ancient Mariner”.Secondly,she finds two points of view toward the Albatross stated by the scholars. Library research including internet browsing is used to form the conceptual models which are related to the topic. Moreover, sociological and psychological approach is used to analyze the data descriptively. Due to the analysis dealing with the theme, the writer also uses structural approach to analyze the data. The gothic elements of "The Rime of The Ancient Mariner” consist of mysticism, omen, curse, supernatural, ghost or spirit. In his journey the Ancient Mariner got some misery. The points of view toward the albatross depends on the people's own interpretations. One of them assumes that the albatross is a smart seabird. While, the other one assumes that albatross is manifestation of God and represented love.
