Abstract
The objectives of study entitled Willoughby's Materialism in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility are: (1) to describe Willoughby's materialistic points of view, (2) to analyze the influence of materialism on Willoughby's actions, (3) to analyze the effects of Willoughby's materialistic actions. The data corpus are all the words, phrases, clauses, and discourses that refer to the points of view and the actions. of Willoughby's. materialism in Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility and the effects of the actions. Psychological approach is used to analyze the data descriptively. Willoughby's materialistic points of view can be seen when he sees money as means of achieving many things. He considers that money as means of preventing rupture, reaching happiness, and preventing poverty. Furthermore, his materialistic points of view influences his actions. All of his attempted are designed to marry a rich woman. In the following term, he always associates with rich people so that he can marry one of them. Finally, his materialistic views and actions cause some disadvantages. They give rise to his lover's sadness, his friends' hesitancy,and his regret.
