Abstract

The main problem in this research is the violation of application of cooperative principles and their maxims in conversation. There are two problems to analyze. First, the maxims of conversation violated by the characters in the drama The Boy Comes Home by A.A Milne. Second, the purposes of the characters violate the maxim in the drama The Boy Comes Home by A.A Milne. To achieve the objectives, this research applies library research for collecting data.The researcher needs conversation form for the data analysis. The data of the research are taken from the drama The Boy Comes Home by A.A Milne which consist of conversations. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method because this method is considered as the most suitable method that could be applied to solve the problems of the research. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying,and analyzing the data. In doing the research, the researcher analyzs all of the 45data one by one. The analysis of the violation of maxims in this research result 6 data which violate the maxim of quality, 26 data which violate the maxim of quantity, 17 data which violate the maxim of relevance, and 10 data which violate the maxim of manner. When the speakers violatesome maxims, they have some purposes. In this research, the researcher finds that there are 21 data are the violation of maxim based on the purpose of representatives.5 data are the violation of maxim based on the purpose of directives. 4 data are the violation of maxim based on the purpose of commissives. 4 data are the violation of maxim based on the purpose of expressives. 11 data are the violation of maxim based on the purpose of declaratives.
