Abstract

Jane Austen's Emma written in the early nineteenth century reflects the social condition in England, especially women's position in marriage. Women in England of the nineteenth century inferior. They never have a good position in society. Many people believes women less important than men because women's position is only at home to control household and to raise their children. It made women never have an opportunity to get a better education and to be equal with men.Jane Austen through Emma Woodhouse's character in her novel Emma tries to encourage women at the time by giving her opinion and her criticism about women's position in marriage. Since this thesis is a library research, first data taken from the novel Emma written by Jane Austen. Other data taken from supporting books such as critical books, essays, and theoretical books. Using the sociological approach, the writer shows that Jane Austen' s Emma is a reflection of the situation in the nineteenth century that women's position in marriage is more inferior than men. There are three problems for this thesis namely 1) to describe the ambition of Emma. 2) to describe the obstacles of Emma ambition. 3) to find out Jane Austen criticism toward women position in marriage of the nineteenth century England. Emma's ambition such as being an unmarried woman, turning her to be a married woman, Emma tries to match Harriet with Mr. Elton and Frank Churchill but was failed. Emma wants Harriet marriage with a man who have a status. The obstacles of Emma's ambition are despair, cowardice and powerlessness. Jane Austen's criticism toward women position in marriage of the nineteenth century England. Men should respect to women in order to be equal with the men and not depend on their husband. Lower status women should realize that they could get a respectable position in society working hard. Therefore women would be able to earn money and can help their husband financially. By doing this research, the writer knows how the women position in marriage of the nineteenth century England in Jane Austen's in novel Emma.
