Abstract
This research discusses the use of English noun clauses. In this research, researcher analyzes the two problems, namely the functions of English noun clauses and the real sentences from which the English noun clauses are derived in W. Somerset Maugham‘s The Painted Veil. The method of research used in this research is descriptive method. This method uses some step: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. The data consist of noun clauses and sentences which undergo noun clauses processes taken from The Painted Veil novel. The source of data in making this research is W. Somerset Maugham’s novel The Painted Veil. This research is concerning about noun clauses, that needs the source of data in a sentence form. Therefore, the writer takes this novel as the source of data in a sentence form. Therefore, the writer takes novel as the source of data, because there are many noun clauses found in this novel. Furthermore, in this research, the researcher discusses eight functions of noun clauses, they are noun clauses which function as subject, direct object, indirect object, object of preposition, subjective complement, objective complement, adjective complement, and appositive. The researcher finds 44 noun clause in 44 sentences in The Painted Veil novel. The data analysis shows that 11 data (25%) of noun clauses function as subject, 23 data (53%) as direct object, 1 data (2,3%) as indirect object, 2 data (4,5%) as object of proposition, 4 data (9,0) as subjective complement, 1 data (2,3%) as objective complement, 1 data (2,3%) as adjective complement, 1 data (2,3%) as appositive.
