Abstract

Literature is an important record for expressing human's though, human's sight, and human's experience in life. Literature is human's work and can be enjoyed by human. Human can gain amusement through literature. Human feel that they get some experiences by reading literary work. Novel is one of literary work. Novel is written to be read and enjoyed. Novel reader can enjoy the beauty of story and can be taken into a vivid imaginary world. The writer chooses a title "An Analysis of Egoism on the Main Character in Fyodor Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment". By choosing this title, the writer wants to describe about egoism in this novel, especially by paying attention on Raskolnikov as the main character in the novel. Deductive method that is used in the analysis is a method which searches proves from general into specific information. The writer uses library research. It is a way of collecting data from a novel. Searching other proves is also done by the writer to support the reference. Crime and Punishment tells about a university student who comes from a poor family. A university student named Raskolnikov who wants to help other poor people by robbing greedy rich people. Raskolnikov thinks that he must kills a profiteer named Alyona and rob her property. Raskolnikov considers that he is right by doing it. Finally, he can accept that a robbering and a killing which he has done is a crime. Raskolnikov gets his punishment as a murderer a robber in Siberia.
