Abstract

By a psychological approach, this thesis tries to analyze David's homosexuality as the main character. The objective of the problems are: (1)To elaborate David's character as a homosexual. Secondly, (2)To describe the causes of David's homosexuality. (3)To analyze David's character development as a homosexual. In the data collection, the study employs the library research and Internet browsing in order to find the conceptual models of homosexuality, it causes and other reverences. These conceptual models are used to find the data in the novel. The data corpus is in the forms of words,phrases,clauses,and discourses that refer to David's homosexuality in James Baldwin's Giovanni's Room published by Michael Joseph Ltd in London in 1956. David is characterized as a homosexual. His homosexuality can be proven by his past life, his reaction, his thought, and his mannerism. There are four factors causing David's homosexuality. They are family background, early homosexual experience, traumatic social experience, and environment influences.David's character develops as a homosexual. His character changes from having a tendency to be attracted toward the same sex to a bisexual person until making decision not to have sexual intercourse with men anymore.
