Abstract

The objectives of the study entitled The Symbols Related to Henry Fleming's Characterization in Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage are to describe the symbols and to analyze the relation between the symbols and Henry Fleming's characterization in Stephen Crane's The Red Badge of Courage. The library researches including internet browsing are applied in order to find the conceptual models of symbol, character, and characterization. The conceptual models, in the following turn, are used to find the data in the novel. The sociological and psychological approaches are used to analyze descriptively the relation between the symbols and Henry Fleming's characterization. There are some symbols related to Henry Fleming's characterization. The symbols are the red badge, nature, flag, Jim Conklin, Wilson, and some situation,which are analyzed in chapter III There are some relations between the symbols and Henry Fleming's characterization.The Red Badge makes him to get his bravery. Nature is place,which makes him contemplate his guilt. Flag causes him to become a fighter. He carries the flag, builds the spirit of his comrades, and makes a counterattack. Jim Conklin influences him to get his own red badge. Wilson is Henry's partner,who makes him confident. There are two situations, which influence Henry's characterization. Unenlightment makes Henry afraid and feels lonely but rebirth builds his spirit in the battlefeld.
