Abstract

Generally, English word is formed by the smallest meaningful unit, that cannot be broken down any further into recognizable meaningful parts, which is called morpheme. There are two morphemes: bound morphemes and free morphemes. Bound morphemes are usually affixes, suffix or prefix and they cannot stand alone as a single word. While, free morphemes can stand alone as a single word. Suffix -ly as a bound morpheme can be attached by nouns and adjectives and the results are adjective and adverb. In this research, the researcher uses descriptive method because it is considered as the most appropriate method in relation to the problem of this research. This method uses some steps: collecting, classifying, and analyzing the data. In fact, the population of this research is only 100 words, which is not too large in number to analyze. That is why, the study applies total sampling. It means that all of the data are analyzed one by one. The result of this research shows 88 of words ending in -ly are as adverb and 12 of words ending in -ly are as adjective. Adverbs ending in -ly are formed from noun+-ly, simpler adjective + -ly, derived adjective + -ly,-ed adjective +-ly, and -ing adjective+ -ly. Besides, adjectives ending in -ly are formed from nouns and the adjective itself. In addition, adjectives ending in -ly can be categorized as attributive, predicative, and the head of a noun phrase. While, adverbs ending in -ly can be categorized as adverb of affirmation, adverb of time, adverb of degree, adverb of manner, adverb of doubt, and gradable adverb.
